In today’s age of technology and knowledge, people seem to be gaining weight rapidly. The rate at which this is happening is alarming. One of the easiest ways to get rid of all the unwanted fat is liposuction. Liposuction is one way in which fat can be removed from the body with the help of surgery. Liposuction is usually conducted on thighs, arms, abdomen etc.

Types of liposuction:

Before liposuction came to be established as it is now, surgical knife was used to remove excess fat from ones body. However, a lot of blood was lost in this procedure. Currently, the basic ways used in liposuction is insertion of small thin tubes into an incision in the skin. The doctors then, guide these tubes under the skin as the fat is sucked out by a machine to which these tubes are attached. Other than these, there are several other ways that have been put into practice.

Some of these are...

Dry Technique:
This is a way in which liposuction is carried out without instillation of fluids in the area that is being treated. However, this technique is rarely used now.

Wet Technique:
In this technique an isotonic dilute epinephrine solution, with or without lidocaine is used for instillation in the area where liposuction is carried out. 200-300ml of solution is used per area being treated.

Super-wet Technique:

This is one of the most commonly used techniques. In this technique the solution used for instillation is extremely dilute lidocaine and epinephrine. These solutions are used in volumes of 1-1.5ml/ml of expected/projected fat aspirate per location. However, this solution does not form the main source of the anesthesia.

Tumescent Technique:

This is also one of the most commonly used techniques. The solution used for instillation in this technique is similar to the one used in the super-et technique. The only difference being that nearly 3-4ml of the solution is used per expected/projected fat aspirate per location. This volume may also vary depending on the amount of solution is needed to make the tissues turgid enough. In this technique the solution is the main source of the anesthesia.

With advancing science and more research taking place in this area, there is still more scope for development in this field. Having said that, liposuction is one of the best ways reduce those excessively fat thighs.
